Modi spreading hatred, creating divide: Sonia Gandhi

Congress president Sonia Gandhi said here on Thursday that the discriminatory attitude of the Modi government was the biggest stumbling block in the development of Assam.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi said here on Thursday that the discriminatory attitude of the Modi government was the biggest stumbling block in the development of Assam.

Addressing an election rally at Sarukhetri, in Lower Assam’s Barpeta district, Mrs Gandhi said Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi fought against the discriminatory treatment of the Bharatiya Janata Party government to ensure the pace of development.

She reiterated, “Congress is the only party that takes along all communities without any discrimination.”

Warning electorates against the communal design of the BJP-led alliance, Mrs Gandhi said, “When abroad Prime Minister Narendra Modi talks of peace and development, but after returning home he is silent on the hate comments of his colleagues.”

Lauding the performance of the Gogoi government, the Congress president asked, “What have they done for small businessmen They have only increased the burden of tax on them.” She also regretted that the BJP government was curtailing funds for most of the development schemes that the UPA government had introduced for the welfare of the poor and downtrodden. Criticising the BJP for its false propaganda to woo voters, Mrs Gandhi asked what happened to the BJP’s commitment to generate employment and contain skyrocketing prices.

She also said that if the BJP-led alliance was voted to power, the RSS would be running the government in Assam from Nagpur.

Mrs Gandhi was in Assam to address election rallies for the second and final phase of polling on Monday. She also addressed an election rally at Jagiroad, in Central Assam’s Nagaon district.
