The issue of atrocities in the name of cow protection resurfaced in the Upper House on Wednesday after the Opposition parties — the BSP and the Congress — created an uproar over the beating of two Muslim women at a railway station in Madhya Pradesh on the suspicion of carrying beef. They were carrying buffalo meat.
BSP supremo Mayawati said on Wednesday that after the beating of dalit youth in Gujarat, gau raksha (cow protection) groups beat up two women in Madhya Pradesh over the suspicion of possessing beef.
While alleging that the police, in whose presence the incident took place, remained a mute spectator, Ms Mayawati charged the BJP of doublespeak. While, she said, on one hand the party’s leaders talk of protecting girl child, on the other they are getting them beaten up by goons.
“The entire country knows that in the name of cow protection, atrocities are being committed in states where the BJP is in power. Is this something to be tolerated ,” she charged, demanding a response from the minister of state for parliamentary affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi.
Before she could conclude her submission, BSP members trooped into the Well of the House, shouting anti-government slogans: “Mahila virodhi yeh sarkar nahi chalegi, nahi chalegi... Dalit virodhi yeh sarkar nahi chalegi, nahi chalegi.” They were later joined by Congress MPs.
