Lok Sabha mourns death of sitting MP

He was shifted to the AIIMS from Jaipur after his condition turned critical.

New Delhi: The Lok Sabha on Wednesday did not transact any business after a special discussion to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Quit India Movement and adjourned for the day at around 1.20 pm after paying tributes to sitting BJP member Sanwar Lal Jat, who died early on Wednesday morning.

Soon after the Lok Sabha adopted a resolution to protect democratic values, promote harmony and patriotism and rid the country of corruption, after the end of a two-and-a-half hour long discussion on the Quit India Movement, Speaker Sumitra Mahajan informed the House about the demise of Jat.

She recalled Jat’s role as a former minister in the Narendra Modi government, before adjourning the House for the day.

The former Union minister and BJP MP from Ajmer, Sanwar Lal Jat died here of cardiac arrest aged 62, a top official at the AIIMS said.

Mr Jat, who served earlier as minister of state for water resources in the Narendra Modi government, died at 6.15 am, AIIMS director Dr Randeep Guleria said.

The BJP MP had collapsed during a meeting at Jaipur in July following which he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Sawai Man Singh Hospital there.

He was shifted to the AIIMS from Jaipur after his condition turned critical.

“Jat had a cardiac arrest in Jaipur which caused damage to his brain. He was initially admitted to the Sawai Man Singh Hospital and thereafter was shifted to AIIMS. He was on ventilator since then,” Dr Guleria said.

He said the BJP leader suffered a couple of cardiac arrests since being hospitalised. He had one again this morning and could not be revived, Dr Guleria informed.

Prime Minister Modi condoled the passing away of his former ministerial colleague, saying it was a big loss for the party and the nation.
