New Delhi: Keeping up his attack on the government over the Goods and Services Tax (GST), Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Friday said that his party will not allow imposition of the “Gabbar Singh Tax” and asked the Centre to do some course correction “shedding arrogance”. Gandhi tweeted, “We will not allow BJP to impose a Gabbar Singh Tax on India. They cannot break the back of small and medium businesses, crush the informal sector and destroy millions of jobs #GSTCouncilMeet”.

Even as the GST Council meeting got underway, the Congress alleged that the meeting was taking place to benefit the ruling dispensation in the upcoming Gujarat assembly elections. Congress spokesman Dr Abhishek Manu Singhvi said, “The Prime Minister and his government first shoot, then they aim and then think; be it on issues of demonetisation or GST. And that is exactly what is happening in case of GST.”

While former finance minister and Congress leader P. Chidambaram also hit out saying that the “panic-stricken” Modi government had no option but to change the new tax rates. Chidambaram tweeted, “Expect a shower of changes in GST rates from the GST Council meeting today. Panic-stricken government has no option but to concede demands for change. Thanks to the Gujarat elections, government is forced to heed the advice of the opposition and experts on flaws in implementation of GST.”
