New Delhi: A day after the Lok Sabha ethics committee recommended her expulsion in the “cash-for-query” case, Trinamul Congress MP Mahua Moitra on Friday said she will be back with a bigger mandate in 2024. The MP from Krishnanagar, West Bengal, took a swipe at the parliamentary panel and termed it a “kangaroo court” and its decision “unethical”.

Refusing to bow down, Moitra in a post on X said, “Proud to go down in parliamentary history as the 1st person to be unethically expelled by the ethics committee whose mandate doesn’t include expulsion. 1st expel & THEN ask govt to ask CBI to find evidence. Kangaroo court, monkey business from start to finish,” and added, “Never waste a good crisis, they say... This just helped me double my 2024 winning margin.”

In another post, in an apparent reference to businessman Gautam Adani, the Krishnanagar MP said, “Also, Adani - don’t waste your time telling everyone Mahua’s ticket will be cut. The only thing that will be cut is your market capitalisation as your house of cards unravels. Like I said, I will stand from Krishnanagar and double my margin.”

Moitra also received support from Congress leader in Lok Sabha Adhir Chowdhury who, despite being a known critic of the TMC, slammed the BJP’s push for her expulsion from the House.

At Berhampore in Murshidabad, the state Congress president claimed, “The recommendation of the Lok Sabha ethics committee is as good as the judgment of a kangaroo court. It is like passing a judgment of hanging before the conduct of a trial. I ask if there is anyone who has proof that Moitra took a bribe in cash.”

The ethics committee, headed by BJP Lok Sabha member Vinod Kumar Sonkar, has submitted the report of the panel on the ‘cash-for-query’ allegation against Moitra to the office of Speaker Om Birla, sources said on Friday.

The Lok Sabha’s ethics committee on Thursday adopted its 479-page report, which, according to sources, recommended Moitra’s expulsion, possibly the first such action against an MP by the panel.
