Lucknow: In municipal elections for urban bodies in Uttar Pradesh, six out of the 16 mayoral posts have been reserved for the women.

According to a notification issued by principal secretary urban development, Manoj Singh, almost 37.5 per cent seats have been reserved for women. The mayoral seats that have been reserved for women include Meerut, Ferozabad, Varanasi, Luck-now, Kanpur and Ghaziabad.

This has been guaranteed following fresh reservation of wards for the different categories like SC, OBCs and women in urban local bodies. As per the notification, Meerut will have a scheduled caste woman mayor while Ferozabad and Varanasi will have OBC women mayors.

The women mayors from Lucknow, Kanpur and Ghaziabad will belong to the general category.

Similarly, of the 199 Nagar Palika Parishads, 66 (33.16 percent) have been reserved for women. The proportion of women representation at the Nagar Panchayat level will also be 33.1 as 145 of the total 438 Nagar Panchayat seats will have women this time.

The urban bodies’ elections had been postponed as the state government had ordered this rapid caste survey for the reservation of wards for the different categories like SC and OBCs and women in urban local bodies in the state.

With the completion of the survey, the notification for polls may be issued anytime soon.
