New Delhi: The Congress is all set to observe “Save Democracy Day” on Friday with party workers and leaders holding protest marches at all district and state headquarters to protest the decision of Karnataka governor Vajubhai Vala inviting B.S. Yeddyurappa to take oath as chief minister. Meanwhile, Congress president Rahul Gandhi hit out at the BJP over its “irrational insistence” to form government in Karnataka despite “not having the numbers”. The BJP chief, Amit Shah, responded saying “democracy was murdered the moment a desperate” Congress made an “opportunist” offer to the JD(S) to form the government in Karnataka. Mr Shah also described the swearing-in of B.S. Yeddyurappa as the Karnataka chief minister a “victory of every Kannadiga” who voted to “uproot the corrupt and divisive politics” of the Congress.

Mr Gandhi tweeted, “The BJP’s irrational insistence that it will form a Govt. In Karnataka, even though it clearly doesn’t have the numbers, is to make a mockery of our Constitution. This morning, while the BJP celebrates its hollow victory, India will mourn the defeat of democracy.” Hitting back, Mr Shah said democracy was murdered the moment “desperate” Congress made an “opportunist” offer to the JD(S) to form the government in the state for “petty political gains”. Mr Shah also tweeted, “Congrats to B S Yeddyurappa ji for being sworn in as the CM of Karnataka. This is the victory of every Kannadiga who voted to uproot the corrupt & divisive politics of Congress.”

The Congress has also demanded the immediate removal of the governor of Karnataka. Mr Gandhi also added that the Constitution is under severe attack in the country with MLAs are on one side and the governor on the other. While Congress communications chief Mr Randeep Singh Surjewala said that the Raj Bhavan has been converted into the BJP office. He also tweeted, “A farcical Oath of CM’s post, A fraud being played on majority, A treachery with Constitution, A deception with democracy, That is Governor Karnataka illegally swearing in #BSYeddyurappa-turning the Raj Bhavan into BJP Office.”
