In Punjab Assembly polls, Navjot Singh Sidhu may contest, not his wife
Chandigarh: It is not official yet, but Navjot Singh Sidhu, in all probability, is going to contest Assembly elections in Punjab from Amritsar. He has in the past represented the Amritsar parliamentary constituency as a BJP MP. Earlier, there were speculations that Mr Sidhu will contest Lok Sabha elections from Amritsar and his wife Ms Navjot Kaur Sidhu Assembly elections.
However, now highly places sources in Congress reveal that Mr Sidhu has refused to contest the Lok Sabha bypoll in Amritsar and instead will be contesting Assembly polls from Amritsar East constituency, which is represented by his wife Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu. The Sidhu couple has told party high command that only one of them will contest election, sources say. It is learnt that the change in plan is the major reason that Amritsar East constituency ticket was not declared by the Congress party.
Now sources reveal that Mr Navjot Singh Sidhu will be joining Congress next week and once the ticket announcement is made Mr Sidhu will be accorded a welcome by party workers in Amritsar and he will go to pay obeisance at the Golden Temple. Mr Sidhu who is considered a good orator will used as a star campaigner of the party in Punjab and will hold various rallies along with other senior leaders.
Interestingly, the new development has come two days after AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal took a dig on Twitter at Punjab Congress chief Capt. Amarinder Singh, saying it was the former cricketer who has been promised the CM post. “But u r not CM candidate of Congress. According to sources, Navjot Sidhu has been promised,” Mr Kejriwal had tweeted, with a rebuttal by Mr Amarinder, “Oh! Finally you’ve found some courage to face me...at least on Twitter. On Sidhu, we can understand your agony...sour grapes”
