BJP wins first LS seat in Surat

On the last day of withdrawal of the nomination forms on Monday, as many as eight candidates withdrew their papers

NEW DELHI: BJP candidate Mukesh Dalal was elected unopposed from the Surat Lok Sabha constituency on Monday after the Congress candidate’s nomination got rejected and others withdrew from the fray. The saffron-fold registered its first win in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. The state will go for polls on May 7 in the third phase of 7-phase elections.

Congratulating Dalal, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel posted on X, “Hearty congratulations and best wishes to Surat Lok Sabha seat candidate Mukeshbhai Dalal for being elected unopposed”.

BJP Gujarat unit chief C.R. Patil posted on X, “Surat has presented the first Lotus to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. I congratulate our candidate for Surat Lok Sabha seat Mukesh Dalal for getting elected unopposed.”

On the last day of withdrawal of the nomination forms on Monday, as many as eight candidates, mostly Independents and Pyarelal Bharti of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), withdrew their papers.

The candidature of Congress’ Nilesh Kumbhani from Surat seat was rejected on Sunday after the district returning officer prima facie found discrepancies in the signature of the proposers.
