PM Modi Urges BJP to Secure Over 50% Vote Share in 2024, Targets 80% of Hindu Votes
NEW DELHI: With the 2024 general elections only a few months away, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has exhorted the party to increase the BJP’s vote share by over 10 per cent.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the NDA's vote share was 44.87 per cent, while the BJP bagged 37.36 per cent of the votes.
In comparison, the UPA managed just 26.74 per cent and the Congress’ vote share was 19.49 per cent.
The BJP’s target for the 2024 general elections will be to grow its vote share from 37.86 per cent to over 50 per cent, Modi said. For this purpose, the saffron party plans to win over 80 per cent of Hindu votes.
Addressing the BJP national office-bearers meeting, Modi said the party needs to secure at least 50 per cent of the total votes polled in next year’s general election for its third consecutive victory, sources said.
“The Prime Minister said that the BJP will be able to register a more decisive victory if it gets more than 50 per cent of the total votes polled and gave suggestions to achieve it,” sources said.
With 37.36 per cent votes in the 2019 general elections, the BJP had won 303 seats in the Lok Sabha. Now the saffron party is aiming to win over 350 or nearly 400 seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
The BJP feels that by getting over 50 per cent of the total votes polled, the target of winning around 400 seats can be easily achieved.
It is learnt that the saffron party believes that getting 80 per cent of its core vote bank (Hindus) will help them achieve the target of 50 per cent set by the Prime Minister.
Another leader noted that getting 80 per cent of the Hindu votes would translate to the BJP easily getting around 60 per cent of the votes polled, about 10 per cent more than the target of 50 per cent.
He added that while the BJP is eyeing the majority community votes, the party, as per the vision laid down by the Prime Minister, is also working to make inroads among other minority communities.
With an eye on majority votes in next year’s Lok Sabha polls, the BJP has already started organising several programmes to make the opening of Ram Mandir on January 22 a mega event across the country.
An insider told this newspaper that the opening of the Ram Mandir to devotees, along with the welfare and development works of the Modi government, will be a crucial part of the BJP's 2024 general election campaign.
“Ram Mandir will dominate our electoral agenda from January 1. Several programmes and events will be held across the country to reach out to Hindu voters across the country,” a BJP leader said.
