Rajen Gohain gets clean chit in rape case

Mr Gohain had announced he would not contest the elections as a rape case was pending against him.

Guwahati: In what has come as huge relief for Union minister of state for railways Rajen Gohain, the Gauhati high court here on Monday gave him clean chit in a rape case while dismissing the case after the petitioner submitted that there was an misunderstanding between the accused and the victim.

Mr Gohain had announced he would not contest the elections as a rape case was pending against him. This last minute dramatic court verdict may help Mr Gohain to secure re-nomination for the fifth term in the Lok Sabha from Nagaon constituency.

The BJP central election committee had finalised the name of Rupak Sarma from Nagaon Lok Sabha seat in his place, but it was kept on hold anticipating a favourable court verdict.

Earlier Mr Gohain told reporters that he was denied a ticket for having this case. The BJP central election committee, in anticipation of this court verdict, has not declared candidature from Nagaon even as all other nine of candidates are declared.

Looking at the delay, there is every probability that the four times MP might get a relook. This is significant Mr Gohain on Friday had accused a big conspiracy is being hatched to humiliate him. His wife Rita Nath Gohain in fact broke down before television saying that the case filed against her husband was false and aimed at to finish his political career.
