Street clashes mar voting in Anantnag
Srinagar:The polling in the second phase of election in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag constituency was marred by a series of street clashes at places on Monday. At least four protesters were injured in security forces’ pellet firing on stone-pelting mobs, witnesses and hospital sources said.
Polling in most parts of Kulgam, one of the four districts comprising the Anantnag constituency, began on a very dull note. It started picking up at a modest rate in some areas around noon, but overall the district saw a low turnout of only 10.32 per cent, much to the disappointment of the political parties and candidates in the fray. The authorities are equally unhappy over the poor turnout but relieved that no major incident of violence took place during the polling.
Anantnag Lok Sabha constituency comprises 16 Assembly segments and spreads over four districts — Anantnag, Kulgam, Shopian and Pulwama.
All these districts are often referred to as “South Kashmir”.
