Rahul Gandhi slams PM ‘false promises’

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi lashed out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him here on Tuesday of making false promises.

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi lashed out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him here on Tuesday of making false promises.

Addressing three election rallies — in Karbi Anglong, Karimganj and Cachar districts of Assam — Mr Gandhi also warned that the BJP and RSS would try to create communal unrest in Assam. He cautioned the people against falling victim to the “divisive” politics of the BJP, alleging that if the saffron party is voted to power here, the state will be controlled from Nagpur (RSS headquarters) or the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

In a blistering attack on the BJP, the Congress vice-president said, “Wherever the BJP goes, it spreads disharmony and hatred. It makes people fight among themselves. It created riots in Haryana within one and a half years of coming to power. In Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh it had instigated riots prior to the Lok Sabha polls.”

Pointing out that the Congress had ended the era of violence in the past 15 years, Mr Gandhi said, “The BJP wants to destroy the harmony and brotherhood that Congress has established in Assam. It wants to impose a single line of thought across the country and destroy the diverse culture, heritage, tradition and history of the entire country.”

Mocking Mr Modi’s electoral promises, the Congress vice-president accused him of failing to keep promises made before the 2014 Lok Sabha election and urged the people to question him about what happened to the promises he made, like putting '15 lakh in each Indian’s account out of the black money brought back from foreign banks, bringing down prices of essentials, and setting a better minimum support price for farmers.

Mr Gandhi also accused the BJP government of helping defaulters like Vijay Mallya and Lalit Modi flee the country and making no attempts to bring them back to stand trial before the law of the land.

Praising Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi, under whom the Congress is seeking a fourth straight term in the state, Mr Gandhi said, “Modiji makes tall promises and forgets about them and wants the people to also forget. But Gogoiji does not make many promises, he works more.”

Mr Gandhi also promised a package of '1,000 crore for Barrak Valley if voted to power. He said his door would always be open to the people of Barrak Valley and invited them to approach him with their grievances.
