In wake of increasing incidents of heavy shelling by Pakistan along the border, home minister Rajnath Singh discussed the situation with defence minister Parrikar, national security adviser Ajit Doval and Army Chief Gen. Dalbir Singh Suhag at a high level meeting on Tuesday.

Eight civilians were killed while 22 others injured in cross-border firing on Tuesday while two Pakistani soldiers were killed in retaliation by Indian security forces. Senior security and intelligence officials present at the meeting briefed the home and defence minister about preventive steps being taken to deal with heavy firing from other side of the border.

Pakistan resorted to heavy shelling, even hitting civilian areas, since early Tuesday morning in Samba, Jammu, Poonch and Rajouri sectors close to the border. Pakistani forces used heavy calibre weapons like 120 mm and 82 mm mortar bombs, army said.

The BSF claimed that it had destroyed 14 posts of Pakistani Rangers in retaliatory action in Ramgarh and Arnia areas in Jammu region.

Sources claimed two Pakistani soldiers were also killed in Rajouri’s Naushera sector.
