CPI(M) politburo member Prakash Karat on Wednesday said that there was a need to adopt “a retirement policy for party whole-timers,” strengthen inner-party democracy, improve the quality of party memberships and include more women and youth members into the party to streamline the party organisation.

The statements came after the party received 198 amendments to the draft report and 65 amendments to the draft resolution on “organisation” from the participating delegates on the fourth and penultimate day of its organisational plenum.

“The steering committee will discuss and decide on the amendments and on Thursday, we will present the report and resolution for adoption by the plenum,” Mr Karat said while addressing the reporters.

Speaking about the proposed retirement policy in the party, he said, “There is no age of retirement in our party, but there are people who cannot work beyond a certain age.
