Setback for BJP: AGP may go solo in elections

In what may be a serious setback for the BJP, the regional Asom Gana Parishad may go it alone in the forthcoming Assembly elections in Assam.

In what may be a serious setback for the BJP, the regional Asom Gana Parishad may go it alone in the forthcoming Assembly elections in Assam.

Though the Assam BJP has been trying to rope in the AGP in its alliance, AGP stalwarts like Phani Bhushan Choudhury and former party president Brindawan Goswami on Tuesday opposed the move.

This comes close on the heels of Assam BJP president Sarbananda Sonowal’s remark that the BJP was holding talks with the AGP for an electoral alliance.

The BJP entered into an alliance with the Bodoland Peoples Front recently. Mr Goswami said, “The AGP was not born to make Sarbananda Sonowal chief minister but to serve the people. Instead of going for an alliance in anticipation of forming the next government, the AGP should continue to fight for the interest of the people and party.”

Another veteran leader and working president of the AGP, Phani Bhushan Choudhury, said, “The AGP central committee has taken an unanimous resolution not to go for any alliance. The party can’t go against its resolution.”

Mr Choudhury admitted that the BJP may have approached the AGP for an electoral alliance.
