Days after she helped a couple unite for their honeymoon, external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj responded to the plea of a young woman from Jaipur who was being threatened by trolls on Twitter for her tweet prior to gymnast Dipa Karmakar’s failed medal bid in Rio Olympics.
In a series of tweets, the woman had critiqued the state of Indian sport and poor infrastructure. “Gymnasts from other countries don’t have to perform the Produnova, called the death vault, to gain points... tonight she is going to risk her life to win an Olympic medal, life is not worth any medal for any damned country,” she had tweeted.
It was her last tweet that evoked sharp reactions from people, including threats to her life and warnings of rape, following which she sought help from the Union minister.
Initially, the woman sent a message for help to the cyber cell, however, when she didn’t get any response, she sought help from Union home minister Rajnath Singh and Ms Swaraj. Ms Swaraj responded by sending a message to CM Vasundhara Raje, asking to help the woman.
On the CM’s instruction, DCP Kunwar Rashtradeep went to the woman’s house late at night and, after taking a formal complaint from her, a case was registered against the people named by her.
“A case has been registered under the IT Act. We are talking to service providers and are trying to ascertain the identity of those who sent the hate mails,” the DCP said, adding, it may take some time to identify the accused.
Recently the external affairs minister had helped a man after he tweeted to her that he had to travel on his honeymoon alone because his wife had lost her passport two days before flying. The wife got a duplicate passport within a day.
