A day after a 27-year-old model was found dead in her Andheri home, the police has arrested her former boyfriend for abetment of suicide. Sources inform that the deceased was found to be pregnant and had undergone an abortion at the behest of her boyfriend.
The deceased model, identified as Karamjeet Kaur, had allegedly committed suicide on Wednesday by hanging herself. Kaur, who hailed from Delhi, had moved to the city in February for work-related assignments. In the city, she stayed with her boyfriend Dipinder Singh (24) who is said to be a film director and a small-time actor.
Sources in the Amboli police informed that Kaur was pregnant and had undergone abortion when the pregnancy was at 10 weeks. “In June, this year, the deceased had run tests and found that she was pregnant. When she told Singh, he asked her to undergo an abortion and had also taken her to a clinic in Jogeshwari for the same,” said an officer.
While almost none of Kaur’s family members knew this, Kaur had confided in her sister-in-law. “We spoke to her family members after the suicide and it was then the sister-in-law revealed the information and even showed us a message that Kaur had sent her about the pregnancy and subsequent abortion,” said the officer.
Officials add that Kaur’s phone still remains locked and attempts are on to unlock it to gather more evidence. Following this information, Harvinder Singh, father of the deceased, approached the police late on Thursday night to register an FIR. “He has registered an FIR against the said boyfriend Dipinder Singh alleging that he pushed her to take the step of killing herself,” said a senior officer from the Amboli police. The police has arrested Dipinder and has booked him for abetment under sections 306 (abetment of suicide) and 334 (voluntarily causing hurt or provocation) of the Indian Penal Code.
Kaur is said to have taken the drastic step after Dipinder decided to call off the relationship. “She had gone home to Delhi early this month and upon returning, had been informed by Singh that he wanted to end their relationship. She was very upset about the same and kept pleading with him to not end it. This led to constant fights between them and on Tuesday too they had a massive argument and a mutual friend intervened,” said the officer.
The arrested accused was produced in court on Friday and has been remanded to judicial custody till July 26. Sources inform that the lawyers for the accused will apply for bail soon.
