Whanganui: A paedophile has been sentenced to more than six years in jail after he was found guilty of sexually abusing a teenager while they prayed together at the victim's home in Whanganui, a city in New Zealand.

According to a report in the Daily Mail, the accused used to tell the victim's mother that he is going upstairs in her bedroom to pray with her and would end up abusing her.

The abuse lasted for three-and-a-half years until she confronted the accused and asked him to stop visiting her home. In her diary, the victim has also mentioned that she once considered sewing up her pyjamas so that the accused could not undress and abuse her. She also wrote, -"My purity no longer exists-".

The accused is also being tried for sexually abusing several young girls -- including the victim's younger sister. The victim's younger sister said that she once woke up to the accused rubbing her breasts and did not stop until someone called for him. She also said that he had even touched her genitals.

During the trial, the accused tried to escape punishment quoting Bible's Old Testament verses which stated that if a woman does not cry out for help during sex, then the intercourse would be considered as consensual.

Sentencing him for his crimes at the Whanganui District Court, the judge told the accused that his crimes were 'deplorable'. He has been sent to prison for six years and four months and will be registered on the sex offenders list for life.
