Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday visited the site of the collapsed flyover and then met the injured people and the families of the victims at Calcutta Medical College Hospital on Saturday morning.

When asked about his reactions on the state government’s role after the cave-in, he did not make any political statement and said, “There has been a tragedy here. In this sort of situation, one needs to give as much support as one can. I came here to stand by the injured people and extend whatever little support I can provide.. I don’t want to make any political statement.”

He was accompanied by PCC president Adhir Chowdhury, Congress leader Deepa Dasmunshi.

Mr Gandhi reached the site at 10.35 am and stayed for only five minutes. He stood right in front of pillar number 40, that had caved in, and talked with NDRF officials and the disaster management team.

Mr Gandhi then reached the hospital at 10.45 am and stayed for 15 minutes and talked with some of the patients admitted in the casualty block on the first and second floor of the building.

Hospital sources said he enquired about their health and asked what they were doing during the collapse.

“He also asked them whether they were facing any problem related to treatment.,” a source said.

Delhi rape victim Nirbhaya’s mother Asha Devi Singh, who was in the city to attend an NGO programme on Sunday, also visited the hospital and met the injured.
