Kolkata flyover tragedy: Sabotage ruled out in collapse

Forensic experts and Kolkata police officials have ruled out the possibility of any sabotage in the collapse of the under-construction flyover at Ganesh Talkies crossing in Girish Park area.

Forensic experts and Kolkata police officials have ruled out the possibility of any sabotage in the collapse of the under-construction flyover at Ganesh Talkies crossing in Girish Park area. The construction company officials in Hyderabad indicated on Friday that the flyover may have caved in due to a bomb blast.

But their theory were rejected by Chitrangshu Sarkar, chief scientific officer at the physics department of the state forensic science laboratory, who led a team of experts in inspecting the spot during the day and collecting samples of raw materials for examination.

Asked if the collapse took place due to a bomb explosion in the flyover Mr Sarkar said, “We have not found any such evidence. There is also no possibility of an explosion in the incident.” In the evening, joint commissioner of police (crime) Debashish Boral too brushed aside the company’s indications.

Significantly a team of the forensic experts from the detective department of the city police also inspected the spot and collected samples of raw materials for examination. Echoing Mr Sarkar, Mr Boral said, “Our forensic team has not found any evidence or indication of an explosion at the spot during their inspection.”

Meanwhile, Army officials, who are working closely with civic authorities and NRDF teams in relief and rescue operations at the flyover collapse site, said they were not hopeful of finding any more body under the debris. “The focus of operations is now on debris removal and clearance of the road so that normalcy is restored. No more bodies are expected to be found under the rubble,” Army officials said.
