TMC denies ex-MLA link over IAF man’s death
The Trinamul Congress issued a statement on Saturday declaring that former MLA Mohammed Sohrab was not a Trinamul Congress leader nor did his sons Ambia and Sambia have any link with the party. All three went absconding on Wednesday after the police started looking for one of them who was allegedly driving an Audi car which crushed an Indian Air Force corporal under its wheels during a rehearsal of the Republic Day Parade on Red Road.
Distancing itself from the incident, Trinamul Congress leaders said the party had nothing to do with either Sohrab or his sons. “We’ve nothing to do with the man involved in the hit-and-run case. His father may be a minor political activist who was elected an MLA with Left Front’s support in 2006,” TMC national spokesperson Derek O’ Brien said on Saturday.
Terming the Red Road tragedy as “horrific”, Mr O’Brien branded the driver of the killer vehicle a demon. “It was a reckless demon of a driver, the car owner has no connection with TMC,” he added.
Mr O’Brien pointed out that Sohrab or his sons did not hold any position or post in the party. “Neither of them has ever been appointed to a post or given a letter to this effect from the party,” he added.
TMC secretary-general Partha Chatterjee compla-ined that although Sohrab had no connection with his party, the media kept on describing him as a TMC leader. “Sohrab had won his Assembly seat with Left Front support, but the media still writes that he is a TMC leader,” he rued.
The day corporal Abhimany Gaud was mowed down by the speeding SUV, CM Mamata Banerjee had condemned the incident and directed the police to slap a murder charge against the person driving the killer vehicle.
