Thanks to the journalists’ uproar better sense seems to have prevailed at the 11th hour, with the Centre deciding to put on hold its order prohibiting NDTV India from broadcasting/rebroadcasting for 24 hours on November 9. Of course, the one-day ban on NDTV India is an executive overreach on the one side and at the same time government’s sense of caution towards security and defence with terrorist operation can’t be blamed since we don’t know how the terrorists are getting data to freely attack, as happened in Pathankot. Journalists have the freedom to report news, but such freedom cannot be absolute. If airing a certain piece of news is likely to lead to loss of human lives, the freedom to air that piece of news could arguably be curtailed for the greater good.
