A welcome step

Recently, the Union Cabinet has taken a decision to go in for strategic sales of select PSUs; it’s welcome. The last time such transaction was taken during the NDA-1 government, when Atal Behari Vajpayee was PM in 2003-04. This was the sale of 70 per cent government stake in Jessop and Co. to Indo-Wagon Engineering for Rs 18.18 crores. The recent decision of the government is correct and timely because tax collections may not meet the target for this year. The government would do well to go for strategic sales in all 44 PSUs which are noted by the Niti Aayog.
