A reflection of creativity

Sashi and Sharmila's home is where the traditional meets the contemporary.

Your home should tell the story of who you are. This is exactly what the home of Sashi V. and Sharmila A. in Kozhikode does. Built on 11.5 cents of land in Vengeri, the home of an electrical contractor and yoga teacher reflects their artistic aesthetics.

“Starting from the pillars to the curtains, they had their own suggestions,” remembers Rajiv KT, architect of the house.

The 2,800-square feet, two-storey home of the couple draws from both the contemporary and traditional styles. “The contemporary style alone does not suit our weather conditions and so most people opt for a blend of the two,” feels Rajiv.

The spacious living room has an eye-catching mural art piece that adds to the charm of the well-lit interiors. Here, natural light makes its way through the pergolas provided on the side walls.

Apart from the living room, the ground floor has a bedroom, dining space and kitchen. The simple but modular kitchen flaunts a small space that serves as the breakfast corner. “The kitchen cupboards will never face a termite issue as they are a mix of wooden panes and ferrocement,” says Rajiv.

The wooden carving on the wall near the staircase is the best example of how a need can be turned into something aesthetic. “I have noticed how the walls near the staircases of many homes get spoiled with hand imprints. To avoid that, we attached an artwork to the wall,” says Sharmila.

The master bedroom and two bedrooms with customised wooden cots can be found on the first floor. From the master bedroom, one can go to the open balcony to unwind amid the greenery. All these personal touches make it a heaven for Nandana, Arjun and Niveth, who love spending time here.
