Concrete evidence

Architectural marvels prove how the not-so-beautiful exposed concrete can yield stunning results.

Exposed concrete is not an idea that is welcome at the first mention. Only when it is seen can one realise the elegance and undeniable charm exposed concrete structures offer. An idea that has fascinated architects for several years, exposed concrete has been defining building aesthetics for some time now.

An essential component of urban landscape, concrete can be found all around which makes sourcing easier. Apart from better construction quality, versatility, strength and durability have been encouraging architects to try the style.

Manuraj C.R., a Thrissur-based architect who tries to include exposed concrete and cement walls in his works, vouches for the practice, especially for homes.

“Generally, people are not very fond of concrete and cement as a finish, mostly due to its tedious and monotonous character. For many, an exposed concrete wall or flooring is still associated with the image of an unfinished construction,” he says.

However, it is slowly evolving into a trend, going by the choices in the past few years. “A polished and smooth finish for the concrete and cement ceiling ensures that it easily blends in with the interiors and contributes to the ventilation. We can also enhance the rustic finish of concrete by bringing in bright and dark contrast elements. Exposed concrete can be pigmented and given various textures, making it more aesthetically appealing,” he adds.

Apart from style, use of concrete and cement can be economical as well. “It reduces the cost of construction and has considerable long-term effects like less maintenance,” opines Manu.

A component that has been highly stigmatised and much celebrated, concrete has been much loved and hated, but there is no denial of its endless potential and inspiring innovations in architecture concepts.
