Abhisarika, depicting women who go to meet their lovers secretly.
It is often said that works of art often tell stories. Artists can present narrative in many ways-by using a series of images representing moments in a story, or by selecting a central moment to stand for the whole story.
National Scholarship artist Sukanta Das has woven a love story about the beloved Abhisarika (“one who moves”) to convey her secret meetings with her lover, setting aside her modesty. She is depicted at the door of his house and on his way to the tryst, defying all kinds of difficulties like storms, snakes and dangers of the forest. In art, Abhisarika is portrayed often in hurry towards his destination. The story has been told in an exhibition “Abhisarika” at Lalit Kala Akademi in Rabindra Bhavan from April 20 to 26.
