Saree's modern makeover

Give the old fashioned approach a twist with these new age versions.

The quintessential saree should be and is every Indian girl’s go to outfit for a night out or whenever she wants to make a statement. Reinventing the traditional, desi look has been on everyone’s mind with designers and fashionistas bringing their A-game. Fusion has been on an all time high and these Western influences have slowly but steadily been growing on us all. These fashion gurus from the city decode the latest trends that have changed the way we look at the six yard drape, completely.

The cold shoulder and off shoulder trend for blouses was just waiting to happen. Fashionistas have been quite experimental with the blouses they choose in terms of contrasting colour palettes, cuts and designs! City-based designer Govind Kumar Singh says, “The season has seen designs that enhance the shoulders. Cold shoulder and backless blouses are also having a moment and they make for a very feminine look. People are also experimenting with sleeve lengths and long sleeves so three-fourth sleeves are the trend at the moment. You can also pair your sarees with jackets, this is something a lot of girls are trying out.”

Nailing the casual look in a sari with a button down shirt could be your winning ticket according to Vasundhara Agarwal, a fashion enthusiast and blogger at Tiara and Her says, “I sometimes like to switch the blouse for my crop tops and it works great! A standard button down shirt that you would usually wear to work easily replaces the traditional blouse, creating a very chic, contemporary look. The way you drape your saree can make all the difference, taking your look from traditional to ideal couture wear.”

The traditional look is also going to help you score brownie points and if you’re experimenting with sarees it’s always better to ask for help beforehand. “You could drape your saree in so many different ways. Wearing it with tapered trousers or dhoti pants is really cool. However I think that a classic look like donning the Kerala saree is something you can always go back to. Take your sari seamlessly from day to night with your accessories. Sometimes minimum accessories helps to keep the look concentrated on your draping efforts!,” says designer Anmol Bajaj. And boy, does it pay off!
