Lakme Fashion Week: Simplicity wins the ramp
For designer Sanjukta Dutta, the Summer/ Resort 2018 was a carefully crafted and ethereally unique blend of history, art and culture. Inspired by the traditions of North East India, rich, luxurious handloom fabrics comprised silk, cotton, silk-blends, silk yarns, mulberry-silk and brocade that are native to India’s seven sister states (Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura) were the highlight of this collection.
Showstopper Dia Mirza wore a full-sleeved ruby red blouse, matched with ochré-gold toned sari with shimmering embroidery that comprised gold zari work, stones and sequins.
Designer duo Shantanu and Nikhil presented their collection on the fourth day of Lakme Fashion Week (LFW) Spring/ Summer 2018 with their collection, The Tribe Story. Aimed at the fashionable millenials, the spring summer collection showed influences of the several tailoring techniques in India. These were clearly seen through layered pleating, bold colour blocking, long line cape structures, reinterpreted drapes, aged textures and coherent jewellery surface ornamentation techniques. The interweaving of tassels and tape was to break away from any rigid categorisation of gender. Showstopper Saif Ali Khan strode down the ramp in a black asymmetric closure kurta over slim pants.
Meera and Muzaffar Ali encapsulated grandeur and royalty with their collection Samanzar — A Garden of Flowers. The exotic, regal occasion wear featured royal attire, dabbed with a generous dose of pearls and sequins. The flowing capes and shrugs adorning the classic shararas and sarees were visions of beauty, as they floated down the ramp on glamorous models.
Sama Ali, daughter of Meera and Muzaffar Ali, presented chikankari in a unique manner, which was quite incomparable. The choice of fabric was fine muslin and sheer chiffons that were brought to life with the rich velvets and brocades.
A fresh floral collection, Reshma Kunhi’s Lotus had Bipasha Basu playing showstopper, in a dazzling garnet-red layered saree, embellished with tassels and rich gold embroidery, and an off-shoulder asymmetrical blouse. The collection is designed to showcase the beauty and complexity of the flower lotus that is known for its beauty and strength. Reshma used bright hues such as royal blue, peacock blue, ultra violet, bold magenta, playful pinks and luscious green — all versatile colours that are structured to flatter the female form for her collection.
