The asymmetrical hemline is the latest fashion trend with Priyanka Chopra and Shilpa Shetty among others sporting it.

Fashion is one walk of life that is ever-evolving and the stream of creativity seems unstoppable. Asymmetrical hemline is the newest trend that’s caught the fashion world. Priyanka Chopra, Anushka Sharma, Shilpa Shetty and even Akhil Akkineni carried off the look in style. Fashion designer Nikhil Thampi loves the fact that designers are experimenting and says the trend need not be restricted to gowns alone. He says, “Asymmetrical fashion is being incorporated even in kurtis and blazers and it looks good in any material and colour. But, it is very important that you keep the body-type in mind. I wouldn’t suggest someone who is short to wear an asymmetrical dress, because it will make you look shorter. One can belt it up for the design to accentuate.”

Designer Nachiket Barve says that being able to carry off such an outfit is all about getting the proportions right. “The garment shouldn’t overshadow the person, so one must make sure the lengths are not exaggerated. Since the outfit will look super sleek, chunky boots are not the way to go. To accessorise it, either put together some delicate jewellery or just one statement accessory.”

Celebrity stylist Nandita Mahtani says that the ensemble need not be a single colour. “Colour blocking can make a bold yet sexy statement. However, I personally would like a stylised, well cut, all-black or an all-white outfit which is synonymous with a powerful and chic look. The simplicity in the colours make an asymmetrical cut really stand out. This look could require layering at times, so it can be done with cotton and breathable fabrics for summer,” she says.

Designer Nisha Jamwal observes that fashion is cyclical and that asymmetry was a rage back in 2009 but went away by 2011. Now, it’s pinching its way back in. Like the others, Nisha too swears by minimal accessories and choosing the outfit in relation to one’s body type.
