The monochrome magic!

Although blacks and whites are a fashionista's best friend, avoid looking like a chess set with these tips and tricks.

Going all out with monochrome is one of the easiest ways to earn extra sartorial points. But, there’s no denying that a little slack can throw you into the other (blooper)side of the style spectrum. City-based stylists and designers lay out the laws to avoid a fashion faux pas no matter where you’re headed.

“If you’re just starting out, stick to the basics. Neutral hues like like black, white and grey are stellar options to start out with. Play around with textures and prints, if you want to take your monochrome chic a notch higher. To amp up the appeal of the dressing, play with the entire spectrum from the lightest to the darkest,” opines Babita Jaishankar, a city-based designer. Asserting how a fuss-free vibe lends a classy touch, making it both work and party appropriate, designer Prerana Sarkar adds, “One of the biggest plusses of wearing monochromatic outfits is its versatility. Interestingly, it helps accentuate and conceal your problem areas. Women with a lissome silhouette could opt for a pair of white skinny jeans worn with a white blouse. Complete the look with a white-to-cream sweater to draw attention towards those long shapely legs. If you intend to bring direct the focus toward your face, sport bottomwear with a slightly darker shade and go for lighter, brighter variations of the same hue.If your monochromatic attire has an uninterrupted line from head to toe, it gives out an illusion of an elongated silhouette, making you appear leaner than you truly are!”

Given the myriad styling options the trend offers, Devika Kalia, a city-based designer concludes by adding, “Metallic hues lend a fantastical touch to monochrome ensembles. For instance, if your dress is black and white, you can team it with a metallic silver clutch, bracelet or a golden pair of pumps. Also, if the patterns of an outfit are nautical or geometric, you can pull off the look with plain accessories like a hat or a messenger clutch to instantly elevate your look!”
