Inspired by the night
Designer Arpita Mehta made her debut in Lakme Fashion week just five years ago with her collection Violet Garden. It has been an arduous journey for the young designer, who started her own line in 2007. The taste of success however, has been sweet, and she has, since, dressed A-list Bollywood actress like Kareena Kapoor Khan, Alia Bhatt, Madhuri Dixit and Deepika Padukone among many other beauties.
This time round, she has come up with a new collection for women to capture them in their most sensuous. Since moods are often connected to the time of the day, the designer has aptly chosen to title her collection The Midnight Muse.
“The Midnight Muse is a sensuous mood that every woman longs for. It is an emotion that each woman embodies. It’s a collection created keeping the bold and sensuous side of a woman in mind. The collection is inspired by the love and longing for the dark night,” says Arpita.
The designer started out in the field of science before realising that she would rather follow her dreams and the passion for designing that she has nurtured since she was a child. “Right from my childhood, when I was studying in school, I always had a knack for designing. I would sit and sketch all the time. I had pursued science but then realized my passion is in fashion and designing and that’s how it started and I haven’t looked back ever since,” she recalls.
Since she began though, her designs have evolved. Arpita says that since her designs reflect her life and how she has grown as a person, they have also become more streamlined, as she found her footing in the industry. “Over the years, I have created collections keeping myself or what I would like to wear in mind. As I grow older, my sensibilities have changed, my perception has changed and all of this I believe reflects in my collections. They seem more cohesive, structured and focused,” she explains.
Having designed for some of the industry’s top actresses already, Arpita is now interested in dressing yet another of B’wood’s fashionistas. “I would like to design for someone who I haven’t worked with yet. That would be Anushka Sharma. She seems to have a very interesting personality, carries off clothes with ease, and is an easy going and cool person,” she quips.
Like most of her contemporaries, Aprita is a firm believer in sustainable fashion. However, she doesn’t want that to come in the way of her creativity. “I definitely believe in the idea of sustainable fashion, as it is a great initiative. However, I would love to follow my own path in creating that over following a norm,” she signs off.
