Straight from the runway

AIFW's winter edition brought welcome shots of colours, checks, ruffles, military chic, and more.

Peplum chic
Each season throws up a new silhouette, and for autumn and winter ’17 the catwalks have prompted the return of the curve-enhancing peplum. The key to nailing this look is to keep it simple and stripped back. Make sure your bottom half is fitted and pair with killer heels and a slick of red on the lips for polish.

Layer flair
Figuring out the right combination of proportion, colour and texture is the sort of fashion Rubik’s Cube that can delight your sartorial soul. For the upcoming season you need to layer to achieve a certain look and to just stay warm.

Black swan
In fashion, black is not a negative but a neutral mediator. The hue or the absence of hue is practical, never fades and goes with everything. Hence, the flattering black will surely dictate the autumn colour board.

Check, please
There’s something instinctively cosy about squares that readily come in different colours, perferably — black and white. But if the winter catwalk is anything to go by, the practical checks have got a colourful makeover.

Ruffle up
Ruffles build the foundation of a dramatic evening look. Whether they’re framing the face or spiraling off the hips, the winters will be all about playfulness.

Geometry class
Mathematics may not have been your favourite subject but buckle up to start your geometric fashion lessons. Interlocking patchwork designs, checks on checks, houndstooth with a psychedelic upgrade are some great options to try.

Military diaries
Several designers added militaristic élan to garments by reinventing varying shades of olive green in military-style jackets, epaulet detailing on coats, camouflage printed accessories, camo accents, uniform details in skirts and more. With a pocket for everything and style to match modern sensibility, Fall’s fashion has taken to utilitarian style.
