Girl who was seen walking with tuna cans in Syria gets prosthetic legs

As pictures emerged on social media, Turkish Red Crescent intervened and the girl was moved to Istanbul for treatment.

Several heartbreaking stories have been reported from Syria over the years as a civil war continues to devastate the country. But there are some stories which also come as a glimmer of hope amidst all the darkness and chaos.

The story of a little girl born without legs using tin cans to walk on dusty roads in Syria sparked outrage across the globe. Now images of Maya Merhi taking her first steps with prosthetic limbs have become a welcome sight on the internet.

The eight-year-old has a congenital condition same as her father and he used pipes and tuna cans to help her survive at a refugee camp. This enabled Maya to attend school and move around in the camp instead of crawling everywhere.

As pictures emerged on social media, Turkish Red Crescent intervened and the girl was moved to Istanbul for treatment. Here a specialist gave her a life changing procedure for free and while she can walk, it may take months for her to have full mobility.

He also praised the father’s measures which enabled the child to get used to walking.
