Mangoes may keep heart diseases, diabetes at bay
A new study now says that having mangoes could prevent heart disease and diabetes.
The study, which, interestingly, has been funded by suppliers of the exotic fruit found that they can control blood sugar levels and slash cholesterol.
Funded by the US-based National Mango Board, the review also showed that the fruit has benefits for the brain, skin and gut.
However, critics are not ready to take it at face value saying that it could be an agenda to sell more mangoes.
The research that was conducted at the Institute of Technology, Chicago looked into seven studies conducted showing the relationship betweeh mangoes and type 2 diabetes in the last two decades.
They found that consumption of the fruit appeared to control blood sugar levels in both humans and animal sufferers. Uncontrolled levels can be deadly.
The experiment also showed that mango consumption reduced cholesterol and triglycerides. High levels of these can lead to heart disease.
Speaking to The Daily Mail, lead author of the study Dr Britt Burton-Freeman, based at the university's Center for Nutrition Research, said: 'Mangos are one of the popular fruits in the world.
