New ear for woman grown in her forearm after she lost it in a road accident
Life can’t be the same for people after a devastating accident that leaves them with life altering injuries. But advancements in medical science have time and again come as a ray of hope in such cases.
Shamika Burrage lost her entire left ear in a car accident when she was 19 and there was little hope for recovering from that. But a rare procedure changed things as surgeons recreated an ear from cartilage and tucked it in her arm so that it develops completely.
The ear will be attached to the left side of her face after it has finished growing and Burrage will be able to feel the appendage too. She was thrown out of the car in the mishap which left her spine fractured in many places and the left ear completely destroyed.
The ear has been created from a cartilage which was harvested from her ribs and a section of skin on her forearm was expanded to make room for it.
