Conjoined twins separated after being attached at the chest and abdomen for 2 years
Several cases of twins born attached to each other have been reported in the past few years. While most are separated through surgery, some cases may be more complex since the children may be joined at a critical point in the body.
After sharing a tissue around their hearts, a liver and diaphragm for almost two years, Anna and Elizabeth Richards have finally been separated following a seven hour operation. The girls were born attached at the chest and abdomen as they now lay on separate beds.
The family knew that their daughters will be conjoined before they were born but it wasn’t known if they could ever live apart. Tests were conducted to assess their strength and vital organs which they shared after they were born.
The girls are recovering and will take a month before they are finally able to go home for the first time.
