Consuming junk food, red meat increases risk of bowel cancer
Diet rich in processed foods, sugary drinks and refined grains can increase risk of bowel cancer by a third, the Daily Mail reported.
These foods have been found to cause inflammation which can lead to this form of cancer.
The study, conducted by a team at Harvard University, also point out that the risk is even greater for overweight men and lean women, even if you do not consume alcohol.
"Higher body weight and obesity, is a state of low-grade colorectal inflammation," study author Dr Fred Tabung told the Daily Mail.
Bowel cancer is a very common type of cancer people are diagnosed with. "Inflammation plays an important role in cancer development, including colorectal cancer," Dr Tabung revealed in the report.
Here are some of the circulatory markers of inflammation, according to the report.
* Offal
* White fish
*Vegetables other than green leafy vegetables
*Dark yellow vegetables
*Diet drinks
*Tomatoes
Fewer signs linked to inflammation were:
*Beer
*Wine
*Tea
*Coffee
*Green leafy vegetables
*Snacks
*Fruit juice
*Pizza
If you haven't been eating right, you can always start developing better habits today. "This all points to the opportunity that we have in diet, body weight and physical activity. These are all lifestyle factors that, if intervened on at any time could lead to much higher health benefits," Dr Tabung explained.
The study was originally published in JAMA Oncolog.
