Finnish lifestyle trend asks people to build strength by taking a plunge in frigid water

Sisu works on how simple things which can be easily included in day to day life enable people to build strength by challenging them.

Going for a swim out in the bitter cold or cycling to work in tough climatic conditions doesn’t sound particularly appealing. But a new lifestyle trend following the likes of hygge from Denmark and lagom from Sweden may make you change your mind.

Recently declared the happiest country on the planet by UN, Finland is the latest Scandinavian country to introduce a lifestyle craze that may sound insane. People are taking a plunge into the frigid winter sea to follow a trend called Sisu which is meant to help people cope with difficult times.

Courage in everyday life helps people develop resilience and have better overall well being. Sisu works on how simple things which can be easily included in day to day life enable people to build strength by challenging them.

Apart from improving energy levels, these activities also help people cope with anxiety and depression. Winter swimming is one of the most powerful exercises and is a popular pastime for Finnish people who have private clubs specifically for this activity.

It initially feels painful and unbearable but later a sense of euphoria takes as one feels energised and calm. Being in cold water for 30 seconds also has health benefits equal to running up and down the stairs 15 to 20 times.

People in Finland also use movement as medicine for aches instead of taking pills as spending time outdoors despite the country’s harsh weather is as key aspect of Sisu. There’s also forest therapy where people walk through woods to look for food including berries and mushrooms.

Filling up plates with balanced proportions of vegetables, oily fish and fibre rich bread instead of taking to fad diets keeps obesity at bay. Incorporating exercise into daily routine is crucial for achieving Sisu.
