Green tea supplements may cause damage to the liver as per EU health authorities

Health officials in Canada demanded more detailed warnings after a teenager had to undergo dialysis for his liver after taking the pills.

Green tea extracts are often associated with several health benefits as a large number of people regularly consume such supplements. But even these can turn out to have adverse effects if people are not careful with the dosage.

Health authorities in the EU have warned that green tea supplements can cause health issues if people consume more than 800 mg. While a safe dosage wasn’t confirmed, the extract is found to pose a risk of causing liver damage.

The watchdog called for labels to mention the risks and asked for more trials to be conducted about effects of green tea catechins. Health officials in Canada demanded more detailed warnings after a teenager had to undergo dialysis for his liver after taking the pills.

There are also other problems reported including a 16-year-old in England being moved to the hospital due to a form of hepatitis she got after taking green tea slimming pills.
