Using medicine derived from cannabis for a long time can impair memory

The debate around legalising marijuana has also led to a number of people calling it beneficial. While many consider cannabis a way to reduce stress, some have even highlighted its use as a medicine.

But now researchers are warning that smoking cannabis or taking it as medication can have adverse effects on memory. Scans showed that cannabinoids can stop vital memory controlling regions of the brain from communicating.

 

This comes after it was recommended that doctors should be able to prescribe medicinal cannabis. While the benefits of cannabis have been identified, doctors have warned for years that it can cause mental health issues.

Since cannabinoid-based therapies have beneficial actions as well as side effects, it’s for doctors to weigh the advantages and the side effects.
