Boy with skewer piercing through his heart survives in Brazil

Freak accidents can take place in the most unexpected situations and in many cases do have fatal consequences. But in some rare cases people miraculously survive even the most damaging injuries.

11-year-old Marivaldo Jose da Silva was playing on a ladder outside his home when he fell on a barrel and ended up with a skewer piercing right through his heart. The roasting rod went inside below his left shoulder blade and went out through the chest after penetrating his heart.

He was rushed to the hospital in the alarming condition and doctors realised that the object had pierced the heart since it was vibrating with his heartbeats. It was transfixed with muscles and was moving with the contractions in the heart.

They said that not removing the skewer actually allowed the boy to survive for such a long time. A delicate operation was performed to carefully remove it and the wound was cauterised at every stage in the painstaking procedure.

The boy has been discharged from the ICU and is now able to breath without a machine.
