Fragrance of lavender helps people relax and can be alternative for anti-anxiety drugs
Mental health is a cause for concern with changing lifestyles across the globe and anxiety is an issue several people are struggling with. While drugs and different ways to tackle the condition are available, alternative treatments which are comparatively safe may also make a difference.
Lavender is widely used to add a soothing fragrance to various products and now scientists have confirmed that it can really help people feel relaxed. Research found that those exposed to the smell of lavender have less signs of anxiety.
Researchers also recommended it as a safer option for anti-anxiety drugs such as sleeping pills ‘benzos’. The drug has been known to have side effects that affect memory, male breast growth and may lead to birth defects.
The calming effect of lavender can also be used for children or elderly patients before surgery as they struggle to take medication. Meanwhile further research is needed to check safety and efficacy of linalool taken via different routes.
Around 40 per cent people globally suffer from anxiety at some point in their lives.
