New beginnings require new perspectives... and these experts give you tips to instill new design resolutions for your abode.

It’s that time of the year when we pledge to be healthier, exercise more, abstain from smoking or even learn a new skill. Most of the time, New Year resolutions are focused on creating new while one forgets about taking care of the old and immediate surroundings, by which we mean, your home! Interiors designers and architects share their fool-proof list of easy, no-nonsense New Year’s resolutions for your home, that will keep your place renewed and fresh all year round.

Architect Ravi Roshan feels you can make a house look new without changing current furniture, with a limited budget and short time with these tips.

  • Wall treatment could be done with wall paper, texture paints, artefacts, paintings and wall claddings etc.
  • Depending on the theme, the colours of a space could be changed, soft furnishing and decor can be picked up to bring a change in aesthetics. Basically, furnishings act as icing on the cake.
  • Floors could be treated and wooden flooring can be used. The selection of flooring depends upon the space design and decor.
  • Refurbish sofas, dining areas etc and any new buys can be made post design selection.

Interior Designers Anupama Devasya and Amrath Acharya
speak about a series of simple changes and additions for a fresher look. Amrath also gives a low budget MO to a new look.

  • Put up a piece of art on a wall.
  • Use family portraits to add warmth to a space.
  • Paint the wall with textures by yourself, with a little help from youtube!
  • Organise your house to fit your lifestyle.
  • Bring home a lampshade that creates better ambience.

Interior decor specialist Anupama
says that changing carpets and curtains gives one an instant new look.

  • Invest in one or two new carpets in vibrant colours.
  • Change cushion covers.
  • Change curtains.
  • Add some fragrance to your living room, some potpourri and aroma candles.
  • Add candles and new bath wear and towels for your washroom.

A word of advice: Don’t try these all at once. You’ll be burnt and stressed out before you know it. Do a room at a time, weekly. Clear things you do not use, donate to charity. Prep up and make 2018 the year you say goodbye to you gruby hand prints and yellowing gloss. And ring in a new look!
