Art with a view
For three days this month, Carter road in Bandra will see a transformation, as Art by The Sea will bridge the gap between artists and people with their third edition. A unique initiative by Le Sutra Hotel, Out of the Blue and Marico Evenings, Art by The Sea will bring 15 eminent Mumbai artists to bring their creations to life while the sun, sets behind them.
Talking about organising such an event, art curator Shraddha Puranye says, “When you go to a gallery or a museum and look at an art piece, you usually don’t know how the artwork has been created and what was the artist’s thought process. Every artist has a very unique signature style especially the way they hold the brush. For instance, although it is a simple line, every artist has his own way to make the line. It’s important that the viewers must understand it so they can connect with the art and the artist.” Not only for the audience, Art by The Sea is also a great opportunity for the artists. Shraddha continues, “It also creates a platform for artist to showcase their work and of course for the people to reflect how the artist created their masterpiece.” Set on the backdrop of sea, this event provides a casual setting as opposed to formal setting of art galleries.
The theme for this edition is ‘Childlike Innocence’ and will see children’s participation. The mascot making competition is not only going to keep them busy, but will also get them inspired by the artists and create something artistic themselves. “We thought the children could also come over and look at how all the art is being created. Inspired by that, they can also create a Carter Road mascot. There will be a senior artist who will be guiding the children to create the mascot,” Shraddha adds.
Organiser Rahul Bajaj, Director of Le Sutra Hospitality, is excited about the event, he says, “We wanted to honour Children’s Day in a way that would bring together the Bandra community and celebrate the child within them. Art is the most universal language that can be understood by adults and kids alike, and Art by The Sea is our endeavour to keep our suburb’s creative streak alive. The master curation is worthy of mention as we have brought together the best artistic minds this city has to offer — an amalgamation of which this city has never seen before and one that will transport you to an era yearned and envied.”
The line-up includes artists like such as Vipta Kapadia, Prof Madhukar Munde, Satish Wavare, Gautam Mukherjee, Rajendra Patil aka Para, Gajanan Kabade, H R Das, Swati Sabale, Gopal Pardeshi, Madan Pawar, Dr. Minal Rajurkar, Dhyan Passika, Shailesh Patne, Varun Kapoor and Tai Borate. Gajanan’s method is unique as he uses cello tape on sun board to create his pieces; on the other hand, Rajendra has more of an abstract style. Talking about putting together this lineup, Shraddha says, “We have a mix of veteran artists who have devoted their entire life to art. We also have professors who are teaching at various art schools and also artists who did not have any formal education but have worked hard and created a name for that.” One of the main attractions will be Dr. Minal Rajurkar’s pieces, in which she combines animal heads to human figures, giving it a fantasy inspired spin.
Art by The Sea is being held at Carter Road Promenade from Nov 9 to 11th, 5 pm to 8 pm
