Chennai’s night life is getting as popular as any other city in the country. And with this the city people want female disc jockey’s (DJs) to play more often as well. Chennai, for a while, had been calling female DJs from cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru but for last few months, Chennai has seen a rise in women DJs.

Santana Maria Lambert is one such DJ. She plays commercial and hip-hop tracks power packed with #electrohouse and #futurehouse mixes. She has always had an interest in music and DJ-ing. She had always been around people who were part of the music industry. She never got a chance to actually pursue this because of her studies and then a career as an emcee and a model. She had tried her hand at learning DJ-ing but didn’t really take it forward because of not being confident enough.

Santana then happened to meet Wayne Beck who, being a DJ himself, saw her interest and offered to teach her. He asked her to give it a shot. She says, “I went for the classes and it was exactly how I expected it to be. I got my first gig from him and it went so well. I got such amazing reviews and feedback from the management and the guests. I started in February end this year and have already played about 30-40 gigs.”

DJ Neena (Neelanjana) got introduced to DJ-ing by Sameer Shroff, a known DJ in the city. Going through personal problem #Techno music was her escape. She plays #melodictechno #technohouse and #deephouse music.

“Music has always been in my life, I’ve played the piano for eight years; and been a rock music person. But then #Techno music changed it all. I played my first gig in December at a private party and the response and feedback that I got made me more positive and attracted towards it.”

She is a single mother to a five-and-a-half-year-old son and she works for private bank. She loves playing techno over the weekends after a hectic week in the office. DJ-ing is not the source of her bread and butter but she loves it to the core. She has played at various places in the city and the tracks she plays are chosen by her but in the theory of it she is helped by Sam.

These two powerful DJs have one message to all the ladies out there and everyone in general — do not let one’s comment stop you from following what your passion is. And who you are and what brings you joy and happiness should matter the most and in return if you are able to help people relax by playing music that lets them escape the tensed reality then go ahead and do that.
