Preventative botox may not be beneficial in the long run

Women in 20s are increasingly opting for Botox treatments.

The current generation is obsessed with looking flawless, and will leave no stone unturned to have pretty faces. All thanks to social media with air-brushed images and edited pictures. From perfect noses, jawlines and cheekbones to wrinkle-less visages, the internet is flooded with “beauty ideals”.

Botox clearly wins the race when it comes to beauty treatments. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, there has been a 28 per cent increase in botox treatments among people aged between 20 to 29. according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. However, the ideal way to have good skin is to, well, take care of it. Daily exfoliation and SPF protection are two things experts suggest focusing on to maintain your skin. Injectables are helpful particularly in dealing with angry creases or crow’s feet. However, there are certain things you should consider if you’re planning to get botox in your 20s:

Botox for prevention

For women in 20s, the most common reason for getting botox treatment is prevention. When early signs of ageing like fine lines or crow’s feet appear, women prefer going for injectables to deal with them. Dr Patricia Wexler, celebrity dermatologist, explained, “Lines get deeper and deeper with age. If you start [getting Botox] early enough and it's done properly, you're not going to need [as much] in the future." She recommends going for lower Botox doses for young patients. This means using micro injections to target specific areas of the face like the brows, foreheads, or around the eyes.

Botox in early years could age you

The effects of botox last for a very small period, say from three to six months. And getting repeated injections is clearly harmful for the skin, because it facial muscles tend to get weaker as you age. Wexler warned, “If you do too much Botox on your forehead for many, many years, the muscles will get weaker and flatter. If one stops using their forehead muscles, they may start squinting using their nose and have wrinkles along the side of their nose.”

Fillers: The solution to acne scars and dark circles

"As we get older, we lose volume in our face and hyaluronic acid filler can be used as a replacement,” explained Wexler."For younger women, injections can be used to treat areas with acne scarring or hollowness under the eyes." Often, dark circles are a result of hereditary factors and can make you look dull and tired all the time. But again, too many injections can cause you to look older, as dermatologist David Colbert, MD points out. “When the line is crossed everyone starts looking like they are related.” Wexler added, “It’s a snowball effect of people liking something, coming back too soon [for even more], and then it gets too heavy.”

For the lips

Youthful lips are voluminous and turn up at the corners. However, women who feel perturbed by asymmetrical lips can go in for Botox along the lip line as an alternative to lip fillers. The secret in making them look flattering lies in choosing a good signature lip colour. Dara Liotta, a cosmetic surgeon based in New York City said, “When certain individuals smile, the lip flips in and they lose that upper volume.”

Honestly, the best solution to imperfections is embracing and celebrating the uniqueness they bring. Your 20s are your time to be alive, and are meant for hearty days filled with adventures. The key to having a perfect face lies in smiling as often as you can. As far as fine lines are concerned, think of them as an extremely fine thing to have.
