Cute and fun

Social media is flooded with mothers and daughters wearing matching outfits.

The Mommy-and-Me fashion trend is at the peak of its popularity at the moment with many online as well as offline brands in India working on miniature versions of women’s clothing as part of a single collection. While we attribute this trend to the west, Indian families have been coordinating their clothes at least at the sibling level from a very long time.

Bhavya Chawla, Chief Stylist at Voonik, says, “Little girls are always fascinated by what their moms wear and love imitating them. They love draping saris and dupattas, walking around in their mommy’s footwear and even trying to wear makeup with adorable results, which bring the family closer. One of the main reasons behind the popularity of the trend is this bonding activity that takes place between the parent and child. Millennial moms also love dressing up like their daughters as it compliments their youthfulness.”

While the trend is catching on fast, she has some advice for those who are about to shop matching outfits.

Do not replicate:

You need not do exact replicas of the outfit. For example, if the daughter wears a tutu, the mom can always opt for something with a lesser flare or even a different fabric in the same colour. If your child is more independent, you can coordinate only the colours or similar styles in different colours.

Find your slogan:

Slogan tees are the way to go. These are huge at the moment and you can get yourself with similar slogans but age appropriate. Queen & Princess and Best Mom & Best Daughter are the most popular ones. Tees can also be customised on several websites to say the exact text you like.

Ready-to-wear options: Best places to pick up ready-to-wear clothes would be stores with both women’s and kids’ outfits as you can coordinate the theme of colours at the same location.

Maintain balance:

Do keep in mind not to overdo it by wearing matching clothes everywhere. Pick a few occasions or casual outings for it. Overdoing may also create a block in the child’s idea of fashion.

Create bond:

Also make sure you don’t always coordinate just for social media, but also to bond with your little one while having one of those sleepover sessions with matching jammies and tee or pool sessions with similar swimwear.
