Dark and gloomy is not the way
Reside in a dark room without a single ray of light for several days, and expect yourself to head towards madness. The importance of both artificial and natural light in any constructed space remains crucial. Yet, it is given very little emphasis by people while they renovate their home or look for a new place. But, mind it, one’s mental and physical well-being gets affected because of the amount of light they are exposed to.
Prachi Laud, principal creator and director, Light Doctor, suggests, “We often tend to overlook the importance of the lighting environment around us; however, the truth is, it tremendously affects our well-being. While on one hand less light can do harm, too much light is not going to do any good either. According to Prachi, long-term exposure to improper interior lighting can negatively impact an individual's mood, vision, sleep patterns, and health at large. Studies have indicated that poorly designed artificial lighting can result in irreparable damage to our physical, mental, and emotional health. Further, there has been a growing concern in recent times regarding poor-quality lights as they are contributing to ‘rapid flicker’ and ‘UV radiation’, both of which are harmful for a person's eyes and can evoke potential health risks.
Having the right kind of lighting ensures that the exposed individual is adequately lit at all times and can perform whatever task he or she intends to do, be it reading, writing, watching television, undertaking kitchen chores or office duties, etc. While too much darkness means we have to strain our eyes to see properly, excessive light will blind our vision.
On a concluding note, the expert says, "Too much or too less of light has us susceptible to accidents, falls, etc., and one's productivity is hampered. An attempt should be made to avoid flicker and glare from lights, both of which are harmful for our eyes. It is also a good idea to consult a light design expert to create a perfect mix of both warm and cool lighting fixtures. Also, combine the three different types of lighting (namely, ambient, task, and accent lighting) to get the perfect illumination, while complementing your personal well-being."
