Congress demands probe into BJP MP's earnings

Armed with affidavits of Poonam Mahajan's assets, the Congress leader said that Ms Mahajan had declared her assets of Rs 12 crore in 2009.

Mumbai: The state Congress unit has demanded a probe by the BJP’s investigation team into the huge earnings of party sitting MP Poonam Mahajan, MLA Ram Kadam, and MLC Prasad Lad.

The Congress party general secretary Sachin Sawant said that those who were raising questions over the earnings of Congress president Rahul Gandhi should also probe the earnings of their three representatives.

He also said that the income tax department led by the PM’s finance minister had failed to investigate Mr Gandhi’s income in the last five years and was now raising questions from the BJP’s political platform.

In the last couple of days, the BJP’s central leadership and state leadership have been raising questions over the source of income of Mr Gandhi, as his assets have increased in the past ten years from Rs 55 lakh to Rs 9 crore as disclosed in his affidavits before the Election Commission of India (ECI).

Mr Sawant said in Gandhi Bhawan while addressing a press conference, “The BJP-led government has failed. The BJP's finance minister is bogus, as he has failed to perform his duties. This is a political allegation against our president.”

Armed with affidavits of Poonam Mahajan's assets, the Congress leader said that Ms Mahajan had declared her assets of Rs 12 crore in 2009, including Rs 4.40 crore of immoveable assets. In 2014, she had declared assets worth Rs 105 crore. How did she increase her income by 900 per cent? She should explain it.
